I Love Sicilia 222 Presents 1669, the BIG x Nerosicilia Project

The 1669 collection, designed by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group for Nerosicilia, was featured in I Love Sicilia within an editorial dedicated to the relationship between contemporary design, volcanic matter and local culture.

I Love Sicilia 222 and BIG x Nerosicilia

The article presents 1669 as a project born from the meeting between BIG’s design research and Nerosicilia’s expertise in working with Mount Etna lava stone. The collection takes its name from the 1669 eruption, from which the material used to create the tables originates.

As reported by I Love Sicilia, the project is born from a shared research focused on natural materials and their expressive potential, observed and transformed through an innovative and contemporary approach.

Dining tables and coffee tables are created through an experimental process that exclusively exploits the physical properties of the stone and the force of heat, without the use of glues, metals or binders. During the process, exposed to extreme temperatures, lava stone tends to return to a fluid state, losing its original geometries and taking on soft and unpredictable forms.

From this transformation emerges the design of the collection: a top fused directly over a hollow cylinder that acts as a pedestal. The collection thus develops through essential forms and organic surfaces that reveal the primordial character of volcanic matter.

The publication in I Love Sicilia represents a further recognition of the material research developed by Nerosicilia together with BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group within the contemporary design landscape.
