RE-IMAGINING STONE

New definitions of Ragusa pitchstone, a calcarenite that is unique and exclusive due to its extraction from a single quarry.

Among the Nerosicilia Group brands featured at the Salone del Mobile, Pietra Pece, a calcarenite extracted from the only existing quarry in Ragusa, stood out. Following this was the Quarzi collection by Rodolfo Dordoni, consisting of combinations of triangles and rhombuses embellished with engravings in shades of gold, green, red, and dark brown. Four collections were presented by Jpeglab: Dieci Collections, where the basic size—10×10 and 10×20—is multiplied like a Brunelleschian module; Multiplem, a play of unusual cuts and joints that enhances the characteristics of Pietra Pece, shaping it into triangles and trapezoids that highlight its natural chromatic shades, from light grey to dark brown; Parade, where art meets design with parallel, incised cuts characterized by color; and Exagono, which contracts from a square to the six sides of an irregular hexagon, in a mélange of warm tones typical of Ragusa stone. Lastly, Piero Lissoni’s collections: Palazzo Quadro, a reimagining of traditional wood or marmette flooring; ISO, a series of layouts achieved solely through cutting and assembling, breaking the rigidity of modular repetition; Tephra, three modular square shapes repeated in natural patterns reminiscent of parquetry; and Sumi-e Delta, new geometric structures born from breaking down the square module into two shapes: triangle and pentagon.
